Simple Sew “Lizzie” dress

Hi everyone,

This month I was given the Simple Sew Lizzie Dress to make. This is a super feminine dress, with princess seamed bodice and a pleated skirt. I love pleated skirts because they add lovely volume, but do not give bulk around the waist.

As I hadn’t sewn this pattern before, I decided to make a toile. I measured myself and I was shocked to find that I was bang on a size! This rarely happens for me, and in the past I have had to do full bust adjustments when using princess seams. I was skeptical before doing my toile, but I proceeded with a straight up size 12 anyway. Lo and behold it actually fitted!! I didn’t do a toile for the skirt because its not fitted. So straight onto the main run…

I had this lovely lightweight cotton in my stash, and it’s a similar weight to my toile fabric, so I felt more confident about the fitting. It was bought from The Village Haberdashery over a year ago, which definitely proves my fabric hoarder status! The pattern calls for fabric that is 60” wide, and this is due to the skirt width. You can reduce the width of the skirt if you only have 40” wide fabric, or make panels. Another alternative would be to substitute the skirt for a gather or circle skirt, which is what I am planning on doing for Lizzie number 2!

For this version though I have only made one variation… I added in seam pockets! I love pockets, and will add them to pretty much every pattern that I’m sewing that doesn’t have them. When adding a pocket I always go for an oversized pocket, as I find my phone is less likely to slip out when rushing around. So here is my over sized pocket pattern piece…

I attached the pocket to the side seams, 1.5” below the waist seam, and then sewed up the side seams as per the instructions.

I had a few fitting issues after adding the zip, and had to increase the back center seam allowance to reduce the gaping. I often have this with patterns, so I definitely have to remember to do a narrow back adjustment next time. I don’t think the way I have done it looks at all bad, apart from my center back seam is no longer pattern matched.

I am definitely planning on making more Lizzie dresses soon!

Happy sewing everyone,
